My name is John Varlow, and I have over 30 years of experience training staff within the NHS, academia and other organisations in statistics, analysis and research methods. I have taught and lectured at universities including the University of Leeds, the University of Huddersfield, the University of Bradford, the University of Gibraltar, the University at Buffalo and Fordham University, as well as delivering courses across the UK at hospitals, councils and other organisations.

Before establishing John Varlow | Training and Consultancy in 2018, I worked within the NHS for over 20 years in a range of senior management roles. Most recently, I was a full time national director responsible for national data flows, statistics and analysis. This practical experience allows me to combine technical knowledge with an understanding of the real challenges faced by organisations when using data to support decisions.

Based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, I work with organisations and individuals across the UK, USA and Europe, providing flexible face to face and online training, consultancy and analytical services. My aim is to make complex subjects accessible, practical and relevant, whether supporting organisations, professionals, students or lifelong learners.

My work covers statistics, research methods, data literacy, data visualisation, data storytelling, information governance and the ethical use of data and artificial intelligence. I also provide tutoring and bespoke learning sessions for GCSE, A level and adult learners.

Alongside my training and consultancy work, I regularly write and speak about data, technology, AI, ethics, education and faith. I explore both the opportunities and challenges created by modern technology, focusing on how people and organisations can make informed decisions in an increasingly data driven world.
